KOZHIKODE: This was an Onam that saw vegetables in plenty. Huge quantities of vegetables of all varieties have been arriving at wholesale markets in Kozhikode and in turn at the retail stalls in the city. The prices too registered a downward trend when compared to last Onam. Demand too has been high, considering the availability of commodities to suit all purses. The Vegetable and Fruit Promotion Council (VFPC), a Government of Kerala undertaking, had opened a vegetable stall in the city besides at Thalakulathur near here since September 1, making available all vegetable varieties at prices 30 per cent lower than the market price. "This is the first time that VFPC is running a vegetable stall during Onam in Kozhikode. We could not meet the demand of the customers. 1.5 tonne raw banana was sold and vegetables including bitter gourd and other traditional varieties sold six tonnes," Kozhikode District manager of VFPC, A. Sulfikar said. The Horticorp too held a vegetable sale at the Indoor Stadium. Ripe banana was priced at Rs.14 a kg, raw banana Rs.13, tomato Rs.4.50, and bitter gourd Rs.15. Kudumbasree self-help groups and cooperative societies too were engaged in the sale of vegetables. The vegetable market at Palayam got lively after `atham.' According to Dhanesh Jaipal, a vegetable merchant, items arrived mainly from Ottamchatram in Tamil Nadu. The vegetables used for `sambar' and `aviyal' registered brisk sales. The price was almost half compared to last year.
