The marginalised race ahead

Madhur Tankha

NEW DELHI: Hundreds of marginalised children took part in the 13th edition of the Rajiv Gandhi Marathon Run here in the Capital on Sunday.

Children from various schools run by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and the New Delhi Municipal Council made a beeline for Ambedkar Stadium on Sunday morning to take part in the event.

Flagging off the run, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said children who participated in the marathon would be given scholarships and gifts. "These things inspire children to participate in the run and we remember Rajiv Gandhi, who was an icon for children and youngsters across the country."

More than Rs. 80,000 worth of prize money was given away to the participants. Also, the first 25 finishers in both the senior and junior categories will be given a monthly scholarship of Rs.100 till they complete their higher secondary education.

National Sports Club of India president Subhash Chopra and Delhi Mayor Farahad Suri were among those present on the occasion.
