Father seeks damages for death of his son

Staff Reporter

Earlier petition was rejected by court `Teachers tried to hush up the incident as a simple accident'

NEW DELHI: A man has moved the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission seeking a compensation of Rs.1.25 crores from Amity Business School, Noida, for the death of his son by drowning in Goa in 2003 during a school conducted excursion.

The complainant, Rajeev Chandiramani, through his counsel Zeba Khair alleged that his son, Hitesh, had died due to criminal negligence on the part of the officials, faculty members and the school management. Hitesh (19) was pursuing an undergraduate course at the school. Within a few days of his admission to the institution, the school had organised an excursion to Goa for under-graduate and post-graduate students.

The complainant alleged that a large number of drowning cases have been reported at the beach over the years. Yet the school had chosen to take the students to the same beach, that too during the monsoon, the complainant stated, adding that the accompanying teachers came to know that four more students had died only when a roll call was taken.

He further alleged that the teachers tried to hush up the incident as a simple accident and no attempt was made by the respondents to register any case with the local police or carry out even an internal enquiry into the incident.

The complainant had earlier moved the Delhi High Court for relief but his petition was rejected .
