Villagers block traffic over murder of girl

Kurukshetra: Around 300 residents of Haripur-Baram village blocked traffic on the G T road between Ambala and Kurukshetra on Mondat protesting against the alleged rape and murder of a girl in the district last week.

The girl was allegedly raped and murdered in a sugarcane field on August 31 when she was on her way back from college in Shahabad to her home in Baram.

The protesters raised anti-police and administration slogans and blocked vehicular traffic for one hour. Girls of the Arya Kanya Mahavidyalaya where the victim studied did not come out of the college campus demanding the arrest of the culprits. All entry and exit gates of the college were closed on Monday.

Kailasho Devi, president of the INLD women's cell and former MP of Kurukshetra who led the agitation along with Gurnam Singh Chadhuni, president of the Bharatiya Kisan Union, gave an ultimatum of three days to the district administration to put the culprits behind the bars failing which she said people of the area will resort to more intensive agitation. Meanwhile, four more persons have been taken into custody for interrogation in the case, the police said.
