Vijay Goel on dharna against sealing

NEW DELHI: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Vijay Goel on Monday began a 24-hour dharna in front of Town Hall in Chandni Chowk here to protest against "the inability of the Centre and the Delhi Government to effectively plead in court the case of lakhs of citizens faced with sealing and demolitions".

Mr. Goel said the people affected by the demolition and sealing drives in the Capital had lost all hopes from the Government and its machinery. "They are living in despair and in an uncertain atmosphere. The Government needs to tell the people what it plans to do to save their livelihood."

A number of traders, members of residents' welfare associations and those affected by the drive are participating in the dharna.

Sashastra Seema

Bal's sports meet

NEW DELHI: Sashastra Seema Bal's inter-frontier sports meet will begin at the 25th Battalion SSB Sports Ground here at Ghitorni on Tuesday.

Competition will be held till December 7 in various disciplines like wrestling, judo, fencing and karate.

According to a SSB release, the meet is being organised to prepare its personnel for the All-India Police Duty Meet and Games Competition.

Drive against

female foeticide

NEW DELHI: The All-India Mahila Congress has launched a three-month-long campaign against female foeticide from September 1 to mobilise male participation in addressing the declining sex ratio.

The campaign will be conducted in three phases from district to State level. In the first phase, NGOs would be involved at the district level for coordinated action and efforts would be made to form watchdog groups to keep vigil on nursing homes having pre-natal diagnostic technique facility.

In the second phase, "padyatras" and street plays would be organised in all the districts of Punjab, Haryana and Delhi. A national level rally will be held on November 19 in the third phase of the campaign that will end on November 30.

Birth anniversary celebrated

NEW DELHI: The Delhi branch of Santhigiri Ashram celebrated the 80th birth anniversary of its founder, Guru Navajyothisree Karunkra, on the ashram premises at Pushpa Vihar in South Delhi on Sunday.

A seminar and discussion was organised on the teachings and thoughts of Guru Karunkra to mark the occasion. The seminar was chaired by former Union Minister S. Krishna Kumar, who recalled his meetings with the Guru when he was the District Collector of Cochin in Kerala.

One killed in fire

New Delhi: A 36-year-old man was on Monday killed in a fire that broke out in his house in a west Delhi locality, official sources said. Sanjay was declared dead on arrival at Deen Dayal Upadhya Hospital, Fire Department sources said.
