MANGALORE: Speakers at "Pragati'' a symposium on changing business horizons in coastal Karnataka at St. Aloysius College here on Monday said that development and environment conservation should go together while setting up industries in the coastal belt. The symposium was organised by Aloysius Institute of Business Administration.

Giridhar Prabhu, former president, Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), who spoke on "mega projects in coastal Karnataka" said that the Government should bring in a legislation to specify which kind of industries should not be set up in certain parts of the country. The law should specify if industries should be set up or should not be set up in identified places. It should also specify the kind of industries that can be set up. A Bill in this regard should be implemented in Parliament.

Premananda Kalmadi, president, Dakshina Kannada Parisarasktha Okoota, said the region needed eco-friendly industries for sustainable development.

Environment laws

He said that though there were laws related to environment protection they were not being implemented properly.

Niren Jain, co-ordinator of Kudremukh Wildlife Foundation said mining in Kudremukh area had affected the Bhadra river. If any company started mining in Gangadikal it would definitely spoil the Tunga river.

Western Ghats

There is a need to protect the Western Ghats. Anantkakrishna, chairman and chief executive officer, Karnataka Bank, who inaugurated the symposium, said that the coastal belt had rich heritage. There was a need to showcase this to attract tourists. He said it is also necessary to project the facilities available in the region to attract investment.
