Cultural fiesta in store

Galaxy of stars to descend on city


  • Musical concerts, dance recitals at various venues
  • Folk arts add colour to the festivities

    KOCHI: A cultural fiesta awaits the residents of Kochi during this Onam season. `Lavanyam - 2006,' the Onam celebrations organised by the district administration, is timed in such a way as to begin when all other celebrations wind up on Onam day.

    A galaxy of classical and popular performers will visit the city during the week. A musical concert by playback singer Kumar Sanu and a dance recital by Shobhana drew huge crowds on Monday. Malayalam playback singers Afsal and Ranjini Jose will lead a ganamela on Thiruonam on Tuesday.

    The ganamela will be preceded by `Pandi melam' and `Karakattam,' at the main venue at Durbar Hall Grounds.

    There will be a recital of Mohiniyattam by Shyamala Surendran. `Kummattikkali' will be held at Marine Drive, followed by a dance performance by Anusha Hedge, a concert by violinist Kottayam Jayaprakash and mimics parade by Guinness Manoj and party.

    On Wednesday, a ghazal evening by Gayathri and fusion music by Mattannur Sankarankutty, Balabhaskar and Stephen Devassy will be the highlights at Durbar Hall Grounds.

    At Marine Drive, Theyyam and Chenda Melam will herald the day's programmes, followed by `Kaaralsman Charitham,' Chavittu Natakam presented by St. Antony's Bhaktha Natana Kala Samithi, Fort Kochi.

    A dance recital by film actor Suja Karthika and acrobatic dance by television stars will follow.

    The finale at Durbar Hall Grounds will be a `Music Nite' led by music director and singer M. Jayachandran on Thursday, preceded by Chenda Melam.

    On Thursday, `kavadi' and `singarimelam,' followed by `Old Is Gold,' ganamela presented by K.P.Udayabhanu, Thoppil Anto and Daleema will be held at Marine Drive.

    A mimics programme, `Vedivattam,' by Kottayam Nazeer, Sajan Palluruthy and party will also be held.
