The efforts of voluntary organisations, the police and the district administration to end child begging in the city seem to be yielding results. The city was under the strong grip of a racket involved in begging. Streets were of late teeming with beggars, especially migrants with a child or two towing along. The beggars used even infants to evoke sympathy. More often than not, the mafia kidnapped these children when they were mere babies. Child begging was a common sight in certain spots in the city. With the police cracking down on begging, no child beggars were seen in these places during the last couple of days. Specially trained juvenile police officers and juvenile police units assigned to tackle the menace came in handy.
