`Onam harvest' for weavers

Handloom weavers' societies in the district have something to cheer about as the Onam season handloom fair that concluded here on September 4 evening posted a record sales in almost all the stalls of the societies that participated in the fair. Some of the societies closed their stalls a day or two earlier because their stocks exhausted in the purchasing spree the handloom fair had witnessed over the last few days. Upbeat mood among the participants in the fair reflected the good business this Onam yielded them.

Organisers of the fair are also happy that they have crossed the record sales turnover during the last Onam season. The total sales this season have crossed Rs.2 crores as against Rs.1.75 crore last year.

The beneficiaries of the increased sales are the weavers and weavers' cooperative societies here who have already come out with new designs and products.
