PIL against lotteries
Staff Reporter
BANGALORE:
The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday ordered issue of notices to the Central and State Governments, Meghalaya and Sikkim on a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking a direction to declare Karnataka as a "lottery-free zone."
In his petition, Krishna Bhat prayed for a direction to declare that the Karnataka Computerised Network Lottery Rules, 2001, and the Sikkim Online Lottery Rules, 2001, as opposed to the Lottery (Regulation) Act of 1998.
He said lottery was a game of chance and was against public interest.
He said paper lottery had become outdated and at present online lottery was being conducted in Karnataka.
A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice, Cyriac Joseph, and Justice K. Bhakthavatsala adjourned hearing on the case.
