Catering to railway passengers' needs Indian Railways is in for a change for the better, thanks to the result-oriented actions initiated leading to a whopping profit of over Rs.13,000 crore. However, much needs to be done on the catering front for the travellers' benefit. Steps must be initiated to ensure that the vendors handle food items hygienically. A price list of all eatables should be displayed so that the travellers are not cheated. Unauthorised vendors should not be allowed to enter the compartments. Moreover, the authorities must constantly monitor the service on trains. N.T. Nair Thiruvananthapuram A welcome suggestion The Public Service Commission Chairman's suggestion that the appointment of teachers in aided schools and colleges should be made through the Commission is welcome indeed. Nearly 65 per cent of school and college teachers are from the aided sector. It is a known fact that majority of them gain entry into service by paying huge amounts of money. And the liability of paying salary to these teachers rests with the Government. Therefore, the suggestion put forth by the PSC Chairman that the recruitment of teachers who are paid from the Government exchequer also should be made by the Commission holds good. Bal Payyannur Thiruvananthapuram Doctors should not strike work Medical treatment and services, which are most essential to society, should never be denied to people. Doctors may stage agitations to voice their grievances. But they should not be allowed to strike work, whether in Government or private hospitals, because lives of patients will be endangered. Doctors who do not follow medical ethics and responsibilities should be dealt with seriously. No person should die because of lack of treatment. G. Velayudhan Thiruvananthapuram Infrastructure corridor needed Proposals being made for setting up modern transportation infrastructure in Kerala point to the fact that the State needs a rapid transit solution for people and goods. However, any such project should help the rapid development of the entire State. Growth should not be limited to places near seaports and airports. Hence, a north-south infrastructure corridor is needed. An express highway linking airports, seaports, "techno cities," "smart cities" and other development infrastructure should be its core. Such an infrastructure corridor would be the backbone of the State's development strategy. Thomas K. Varughese Thiruvananthapuram Check encroachments It is with great interest that I read recent reports in The Hindu on encroachments on Astamudi Lake. Working in Perinad from 1966 to 1969, I had been intimately connected with the coir industry along the lake. To move from one place to another, the ferry, known as "kadathu vanchi," had to be used then. The beauty of the lake and surrounding hills, covered with thick greenery, was most enchanting, haunting my mind still. The encroachments, if left unchecked, would mean the death of this beautiful water body and its scenic surroundings. R. Narayanan Kochi
