RECOGNITION: Lt. Governor Mukut Mithi presenting awards to meritorious teachers at the Teachers' Day celebration in Pondicherry on Tuesday. Education Minister M.O.H.F. Shahjahan (second from right) looks on.
Pondicherry: Lt. Governor Mukut Mithi has urged teachers to encourage less-privileged students to make them more participative. Distributing awards to a batch of teachers on the occasion of the Teachers' Day celebration organised by the Directorate of Education here on Tuesday, he said after the parents, teachers had the onerous responsibility of identifying talent and shaping the future of the less-skilled students. "Such students might not excel in academics but might have their own talents that should be nurtured." The Lt. Governor said education had always been receiving highest priority among developmental activities in Pondicherry. He claimed that Pondicherry was fast becoming an "education hub" of the south. With the Government interested in bringing in more and more higher educational institutions, Pondicherry could emerge as "most sought after destination for education". Mr. Mithi said that wide distribution, a highly favourable teacher-pupil ratio and other support services and special schemes had yielded positive results and had also considerably reduced the drop-out ratio in Pondicherry. He commended the teachers in Government schools for their dedication as students from these institutions had started getting seats in JIPMER and engineering colleges. He lauded the unique trend created by Pondicherry Government by providing incentive of Rs.1 lakh to schools producing cent per cent pass in urban areas and a similar amount to schools in rural areas coming out with pass percentage of 90 per cent in public examinations. He made a general appeal to teachers to upgrade teaching process by re-orientation and involvement to place India among developed nations as envisioned by the President of India. Education Minister M.O.H.F .Shahjahan, who presided, said the department had introduced "Star Teacher' scheme to encourage and honour proficient teachers producing highest pass percentage at the primary, middle and high-school levels. V. Narayanasamy MP and R. Viswanathan MLA appealed to teachers to function as role models for the children under their care. Joint Director of Education A. Ramadoss read out the message received from Chief Minister N. Rangasamy on the occasion. (Mr. Rangasamy was away in Delhi participating in a meeting convened by Prime Minister on "internal security"). The Director of School Education G. Ragesh Chandra proposed a vote of thanks. Earlier, the Lt. Governor released a souvenir; the Education Minister received the first copy.
