Kochi: The Thrissur-based Kalyan Jewellers of the Kalyan group has drawn up plans for expansion to various smaller towns with an investment of over Rs.1000 crore in the next couple of years. Talking to The Hindu here on Saturday, managing director of the group T.S. Kalyanaraman said the jewellery group would make aware the lay buyers of gold in Kerala about the need to buy hall-marked ornaments and not allow unscrupulous traders to reap undue profit from the susceptible customers. A chain of 40 stores in the southern parts of the country and in the Gulf was being planned. However, the highlight was a shopping mall in Kochi which would take the pride of place among the jewellery outlets in the country, Mr. Kalyanaraman said. Kalyan jewellers has outlets in Thrissur, Palakkad, Perinthalmanna and in Coimbatore. He said the jewellers should be prepared to sell BIS Hallmark gold ornaments from January 2008 when the Government would make it mandatory on all to sell only standard gold. The Kalyan group would make foray into more territories in the south after studying the gold market. The Kochi shopping mall would have a six-storey extravaganza with an investment of over Rs.150 crore. All the important towns like Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and district headquarters would have a jewellery outlet of the group in the next couple of years, Mr. Kalyanaraman said.
