TUMKUR:
C. Chennigappa, Minister for Environment and Forest, has accused the Congress leaders of having grabbed over Rs. 40,000 crore worth of lands in various tankbeds in Tumkur and Bangalore. Talking to presspersons on the sidelines of a function here on Tuesday to felicitate teachers as a part of the Teachers' Day celebration, Mr. Chennigappa said the land grabbing took place when the Congress was in control of the Bangalore City Corporation and the Tumkur City Municipal Council. He also held the Congress leaders responsible for the encroachment of parks, playfields, public utility places and property belonging to the corporation and the municipal council. Mr. Chennigappa, however, did not say whether the Government would initiate action to recover these lands. Staff Correspondent

Karnataka and Goa unit of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind has welcomed the reported statement of the Minister for Primary Education Basavaraj Horatti that the singing of Vande Mataram by schoolchildren on September 7 is optional. Secretary to the Jamaat Yusuf Kunhi said that the singing of Vande Mataram should be left to the individual.

Maize released

Former All India Congress Committee member T.D.R. Harishchandra has said that in the present political scenario, it would be appropriate for Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy to hand over charge to his elder brother H.D. Revanna and instead look after the party affairs. In a statement here on Tuesday, he said Mr. Kumaraswamy, as the head of the State unit of the Janata Dal (Secular), would be successful in giving a fitting reply to the former Deputy Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in the byelections to the Chamundeshwari Assembly constituency. Ultimatum issued
TUMKUR:
"Abhivriddhi", a State-level forum for development based in Tumkur, on Tuesday, served on the H.D. Kumaraswamy Government a two-week ultimatum to start work on the Upper Bhadra and the Netravati irrigation projects. Members of the forum from over 10 districts held a meeting presided over by the senior Congress leader and former Tumkur MP G.S. Basavaraju. MYSORE:
Tension prevailed for a while at the Government Degree College in Kuvempunagar after a section of students alleged that a student had defaced a poster of Dr. Ambedkar. The police said students boycotted classes and demanded action against the student who had allegedly defaced the poster on Monday afternoon on the college premises. Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram will inaugurate the university administrative block of the Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) here on Wednesday. The state-of-the-art administrative block and health sciences library has been built on 2,48,000 sq. ft. built up area at an estimated cost of Rs. 46 crore. A team of 19 leading farmers from Sri Lanka called on C.P. Sadashivaiah, winner of the United Nations Gold Medal 2004 for invention of agricultural implements here on Tuesday. The team was led by K.E. Karunathilake, Senior Officer from the Ministry of Agricultural Development, Government of Sri Lanka. The visiting farmers evinced keen interest in all the small, medium and large-sized implements invented by Mr. Sadashivaiah. They found the tractor-drawn trencher most interesting. `Only 36 p.c. Muslims are literate'

Partition of the country and migration of affluent Muslims to Pakistan were the major reasons for socio-economic backwardness of a large number of Muslims, according to Imran Kidwai, president, Minority Cell of the All India Congress Committee.
