KOCHI: Federation Cup champion Southern Railway, Chennai, opened its campaign with a comfortable 62-35 victory over Thiruvananthapuram District in a women's Group `A' match of the Geojit Cup all-India basketball tournament at the Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium here on Tuesday. Despite having many KSEB stars including P. Lajitha and Sonia Joseph in its ranks, Thiruvananthapuram appeared jaded and disjointed. The team, playing its second match of the day, never settled down against Southern Railway and finished its engagements in the four-team group with one win and two losses. Later, MEG (Bangalore) defeated South Eastern Railway (Bilaspur) 61-55. The victory carried MEG and Central Excise (Kochi) into the men's semifinals, while the Bilaspur side, which suffered its second loss in the three-team men's Group `B' was shown the door. The results: Men: Group `B': MEG, Bangalore 61 (Sweety Francis 17, Tinu Joseph 11, Peter John 9) bt South East Central Railway, Bilaspur 55 (Nibin Joseph 19, Prakash Rao 13). Women, Group `A': Southern Railway, Chennai 62 (I.P. Nithya 13, Adhirai 13) bt Thiruvananthapuram District 35 (Sonia Joseph 16); Western Railway, Mumbai 66 (Lincy Joseph 12, Sheeja Mathew 12, Menaka Antony 10) bt Thiruvananthapuram 38 (S.S. Anjana 12, Leena Mariam 10). Monday's matches: Men, Group `A': IOB, Chennai 80 (S. Robinson 28, Chandrasekhar 21, Mihir Pandey 15) bt Southern Railway, Chennai 47 (Azhaviah Prabhakar 12, Bernard Philip 11). Women, Group `A': Thiruvananthapuram District 75 (P. Lajitha 26, S.S. Anjana 22) bt SAI, Thalassery 65 (Deepa Mathew 21, Anu Mathew 13, G. Reshma 11).
