Sourashtra College retains title

Madurai: Sourashtra College retained the Rev. Fr. Arulsamy Memorial Trophy for the fourth successive year with an all-win record in the four-team league in the Madurai Kamaraj University hockey tournament at the University ground here on Tuesday.

MSS Wakfboard College with two wins finished runner-up.

In the last match of the league, Sourashtra College beat MSS Wakfboard College 4-2, after leading 2-1 at half-time. Rajesh Kannan opened the account for Sourashtra College in the third minute while Manikandan added the second in the 9th. Albezer then reduced the margin for MSSWB College in the 23rd.

Solai Arasu scored Sourashtra's third in the 56th before Ramakrishnan MSSWB's second in the next minute. Sathyaseelan completed the tally for Sourashtra in the 64th.

In an earlier match, Arulanandar College and Raju's College, Rajapalayam played out a 1-1 draw. Maya Kannan scored for Raju's in the 17th while Don Bosco got the equaliser in the 56th. Arulanandar and Raju's College tied for the third place with a point each, but Arulanandar was placed third on goal difference.

Title for Gopinath

S. Sanjay Gopinath of Sivakasi Nadar MHSS and K. Seetha Lakshmi of Dolphin MHSS won the boys under-25 and girls under-25 titles respectively in the State-level chess tournament organised by the Srivari Chess Academy at SMS Mahal, Karuvanoor, near Madurai on Sunday.

Ravichandran wins

Ravichandran of Divya Carrom Club won the men's singles title defeating Balamurugan of MSP Club 25-18, 24-25, 25-24 in the finals of the district-level carrom tournament organised by LIC Recreation Club in connection with the Insurance Week Celebration here on Monday.

Thirukkumaran and John Isaac of MSP Club beat S. Ramanathan and Arumugam of Anchor Club 25-17, 25-5 in the men's doubles final.

V.R. Venkateswaran of Anchor Club won the non-medallist singles title defeating Sathique of Kamaraj Club 24-11, 23-10.

Mr. K. Veerasekaran, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Armed Reserve distributed the prizes in the presence of Mr. R. Sreenivasan, Marketing Manager, LIC of India Divisional office, Madurai.

Selection trials

Selection trials for Madurai district players for the all-India Rural Games will be held at the Madurai MGR Race Course Stadium at 8 a.m. on September 8.

Trials will be held in the following disciplines: athletics, hockey, kabaddi, swimming, badminton, table tennis, kho-kho, volleyball and weightlifting. Boys and girls born on or after 1.1.91 are eligible to participate in the trials.

Balakrishnan triumphs

S. Balakrishnan of Jeevana School won the title in mini cadet boys event in the Stag international district-level inter-school table tennis tournament organised by SDAT-Table Tennis Coaching Academy here on Monday.

The results (Final): S. Balakrishnan bt M. Pragathis (Vikaasa) 11-4, 11-7, 10-12, 11-5.

Semifinals: Balakrishnan bt R. Harish (TVS LM HSS) 11-1, 11-4, 11-2; Pragathish bt P. Pranav (TVS) 11-2, 11-6, 11-5.

PSR wins title

At Tirunelveli, PSR Engineering College, Sevalpatti, Sivakasi beat Mepco Schlenk Engineering College, Sivakasi, 29-14, 29-17 for the title in the final of the Anna University Zone-10 inter-engineering ball badminton tournament organised by Francis Xavier Engineering College, at Tirunelveli recently.

Other results: Third place: Govt. Engg. College, Tirunelveli bt National Engg. College, Kovilpatti 29-12, 29-15.

Chess tournaments
