Gelatin sticks, detonators seized

SALEM: The Salem district police on Monday seized explosive materials and arrested a person. During a raid in a house at Theeavattipatti, the police recovered 77 gelatin sticks and 125 detonators. The police arrested Murugesan (36) of Ninakadu for possessing them without proper permission. — Staff Reporter

Bus burning case adjourned

SALEM: Former Vice-Chancellor of the Tamil Nadu Agriculture University (TNAU) Kannaiyan and the then Collector of Dharmapuri district Saikumar deposed before the First Additional District Sessions Court in the Dharmapuri bus burning case on Tuesday.

Three girl students of the TNAU were burnt alive when a mob set their bus on fire in the violence that broke out in Dharmapuri following the conviction of the AIADMK leader Jayalalithaa in the Kodaikanal Pleasant Stay Hotel case.

Mr. Kannaiyan told the court that he had sent a report to the Governor in February based on the information obtained from the students, professors and a committee had been formed. He also sent another detailed report to the Governor in June 2000.

Mr. Saikumar said he had visited the spot and consoled the students. He also saw the bodies of the three students. He said he had sent a report to the Government. Special Public Prosecutor R. Srinivasan examined the witnesses. The judge adjourned the case to September 14. — Staff Reporter

ISO certification for Tuticorin Port Trust

Tuticorin: The Indian Register for Quality System (IRQS) in Chennai has decided to extend ISO 14001:2004 certification to the Tuticorin Port Trust (TPT) for environment compliances till August 2007.

The decision was taken after the IRQS auditors conducted a surveillance audit at the port recently to check whether Environmental Management System (EMS) was in order. The TPT got the ISO certification from the IRQS for the first time on September 16, 2005. — Staff Reporter

Dravidar Kazhagam's appeal to Centre

CHENNAI: The executive committee of the Dravidar Kazhagam, meeting here on Tuesday, appealed to the United Progressive Government at the Centre to implement the 27 per cent reservation for other backward classes (OBC) in central educational institutions in one stroke without "any strings."

The committee by a resolution said it suspected that an attempt was being made to dilute 27 per cent reservation for the OBCs by introducing creamy layer and economic criteria, which it said was against social justice. It wanted the constituents of the UPA to remain firm and implement the reservation for the OBCs immediately.

The meeting decided to collect donations from people for the film "Periyar." — Special Correspondent

Poster campaign

CHENNAI: The State Resource Centre (SRC) for non-formal, adult and continuing education has chosen three best posters of the 200 entries for the poster competition held in connection with the International Literacy Day celebrations slated for September 8.

The main theme of the poster campaign was "promotion of female literacy", an SRC release said here on Tuesday.

The first prize was bagged by Avinashilingam Deemed University, Coimbatore. The second prize and third prize had gone to Alagappa University, Karaikudi, and Kumara Raja Muthiah Boys Higher Secondary School, Chennai, respectively.

Students take out rally

DINDIGUL : Hundreds of students representing various schools took out a massive rally here on Monday, stressing national integrity and religious harmony.

Flagged off by the Chief Educational Officer Rama Pandurengan, the rally started from Nehruji Memorial Municipal Higher Secondary School, near Rock Fort and ended at SMBM Matriculation Higher Secondary School after passing through A.M.C. Road and Sub-Collector's Office road.

Later, the Collector R. Vasuki distributed prizes to winners of essay, oratorical and drawing competitions.

VOC remembered

Tuticorin : The 135th birth anniversary of the freedom fighter V.O. Chidambaram Pillai, popularly known as VOC, was celebrated across the district with pomp and gaiety on Tuesday.

Water level

MADURAI : The level in the Periyar dam stood at 119.40 feet (full level 136 feet) with an inflow of 1004 cusecs and a discharge of 1013 cusecs. The level in the Vaigai dam stood at 44.88 feet (full level 71 feet) with an inflow of 1020 cusecs and a discharge of 41 cusecs.

The combined Periyar credit stood at 3551 mcft. The Manjalar dam recorded a rainfall of 43 mm, followed by Uthamapalayam 20, Gudalur and Shanmuganadi 4 and Peranai 1.8. — Staff Reporter

Forum calls for

probe into assault

KARAIKAL: Members of the Karaikal Struggle Group, which is fighting for separate union territory status for Karaikal region in the Union Territory of Pondicherry, observed a fast here on Monday, demanding the Pondicherry Government to order a judicial enquiry and CBI investigation into the assault of A.S.T. Ansaribabu, one of its founder-members here on August 31.

K. Subramanian, one of the members, presided over the protest. S.P. Selvashanmugham, convenor of KSG and president of Pondicherry Cauvery Delta Farmers Legal Action Committee, said that some persons with vested interests and very close to the Congress leaders, had assaulted Mr. Ansaribabu.

Special buses for `Pournami Girivalam'

TIRUCHI: The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation, Tiruchi Region, will operate 50 special buses to Tiruvannamalai from Tiruchi and various towns on September 7 in connection with `Pournami Girivalam.' The Corporation will also operate special buses in the return direction from Tiruvannamalai to these places.

Besides Tiruchi, the special buses would be operated from Karur, Musiri, Thuraiyur, Manapparai, Thuvarankuricihi, Perambalur, Ariyalur and Jayamkondam, a press release from the Transport Corporation issued here on Tuesday said.

Issue ration cards,

says farmers' body

TIRUCHI: The Agila India Vivasaya Thozhilalar Sangam has urged the State Government to issue ration cards to all those who did not possess the same so far.

A resolution to this effect was adopted at its meeting held at Thottiyam recently.

Another resolution pleaded for theimplementation of minimum wages for agricultural labourers.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level at the Mettur dam stood at 112.53 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Tuesday. The inflow was 8,963 cusecs, and the outflow 12,000 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

ERODE: Over 100 students and a few villagers of Kullaipalayam near Dharapuram blocked a private bus for around half an hour on Monday. They claimed that the bus from Erode to Palani did not stop at their village. The crew assured to stop from Tuesday, and kept its word.

Farmers stage demo

SALEM: Farmers staged a demonstration in front of a Primary Agriculture Cooperative Bank (PACB) near Mecheri on Monday in protest against the alleged irregularities in waiving jewel loans from the bank.

According to police sources, the farmers demanded action against erring officials of the bank in Aranganur panchayat.

OMALUR: Staff of a private matriculation school here spotted an anteater (Pangolin), which strayed into the school premises recently.
