360 teachers given Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan Award "No individual can reach great heights without the influence of a good teacher."

CHENNAI: Teachers should set an example to students in all respects, State Finance Minister K.Anbazhagan said here on Tuesday.

He was addressing a `Teachers' Day' function. Nearly 360 teachers were honoured with the Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan Award.

He said `Teachers' Day,' celebrated to commemorate Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan's birth anniversary, was a very special day that reiterated the importance of the noble profession. Teachers should address their weaknesses, try to overcome them and be role models.

Speaking on his fondness for the profession and the portfolio, the former Education Minister said every time speakers on stage referred to the Education Minister, he thought they were referring to him.

"Teaching is a profession that I will always rever. No individual can reach great heights without the influence of a good teacher. They play a vital role in grooming responsible voters, leaders and a successful democracy." Education would not serve its purpose unless it resulted in social development.

State School Education Minister Thangam Thennarasu, who comes from a family of teachers, said the Government addressed all the concerns of teachers and would continue to do so.

The Finance Minister had allocated nearly Rs. 438 crore this year to raise the standard of education in the State. Mr.Thennarasu said he continued to seek guidance from the Finance Minister, who took great interest in the developments in education.

He said steps were being taken to increase the pass percentage in the State and sought the cooperation of teachers to achieve the same.

Newly appointed Director of School Education R.Kannan, Director of Government Examinations Vasanthi Jeevanandam, Director of Matriculation schools D.Jaganathan, Chennai Collector R.Jaya, Education Secretary M.Kutralingam and Director of Teacher Education Research and Training P.Perumalsamy were among those who felicitated.

Three middle school teachers and two high school and higher secondary schoolteachers from each educational district, 20 teachers from Matriculation schools, two from Anglo Indian schools, two from Social Defence School and five teachers from DTERT were chosen for the award.
