Irrigation projects alone will not develop Telangana: K. Narayana

  • Party to launch agitation at irrigation projects if compensation issue is not resolved
  • Outsourcing activities in RTC nothing but bowing to World Bank pressure

GUNTUR: The Communist Party of India's national programme document is under consideration by the party committee, as it needs to be revised in view of the economic and social changes that have taken place after globalisation.

Party state secretary K. Narayana told reporters here on Tuesday that the party would have to react to the prevailing situation in a different way and the committee would finalise the document after careful study.

The Chief Minister's announcement that the Government was spending huge money in Telangana only refers to irrigation projects under Jalayagnam. But that alone would not bring about development in the region, he said. The party's state council resolved to initiate direct action on the development issue in Telangana if the Government failed to perform, Mr. Narayana said at the conclusion of the four-day State conclave.

"If the Government is serious about real development in Telangana, it should implement G.O. 610 immediately, grant a Rs.10,000-crore package after forming a regional board for better monitoring of works," he added.

Outsourcing several activities in the RTC and other public sector units was nothing but bowing to the `pressure tactics' of the World Bank, he said, and added that additional grants had to be made for the education and health sectors in the State.

Farmers would not be benefited through Jalayagnam alone. They needed to be compensated for loss of their lands in the projects first. . The CPI would launch an agitation at all irrigation projects if the compensation issue was not resolved, he said. .
