THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Centre has issued orders forbidding employment of children below 14 years in houses, hotels and wayside shops as part of its move to ban child labour in the country. The order has been given effect from October 10, 2006. — Special Correspondent

Homoeopathy Director refutes reports

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Director of Homoeopathy has refuted reports about the appointment of pharmacists in Government homoeopathic institutions in violation of rules. He said in a rejoinder that all the vacancies of pharmacists had been reported to the district offices of the Public Service Commission (PSC). But as the validity of the PSC lists had ended in many districts, those who had passed the Government approved NCP course were being appointed on a temporary basis till the PSC hands could take charge. Wherever such persons were not available only pharmacists who retired from service were being appointed on temporary basis as per existing rules, the Director added. — Special Correspondent

Convocation on September 24

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The 70th convocation of the Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha will be held in the head office of the Sabha at Chennai on September 24. The certificates of those who passed the various examination of the Sabha held in February and August 2005 would be distributed at the function. Selected writers in south Indian languages would be honoured at the function. The convocation address will be delivered by Education Minister of Karnataka Basavaraj Horatti. — Special Correspondent

Gold medal for parents of newborn

Thrissur: Parents of the first baby born on Thiruvonam day at the Jubilee Mission Medical College and Research Institute here were presented with a gold medal on Tuesday. The medal was presented by Superintendent of Police T. Chandran to Vijayakumar and Priya of Kunissery House at Erumayur in Palakkad at a function here. Fr. Francis Alapatt, director, presided.

Pensioners' meet

Kozhikode: The Central Government Pensioners Association, Calicut, will observe September 15 as `Day of declaration of pensioners' demands.' At a meeting held here recently, the association decided to come out with a charter of demands at a programme scheduled on September 15. Zamorin Manavedan Raja will release the charter of demands, which include a request for sanction of an interim relief of Rs.1,000 with effect from January 2006. The other demands are constitution of a permanent mechanism with statutory powers to address and redress pension-related problems and scrapping of the contributory pension scheme. General secretary P.K. Gopalakrishnan presided. — Staff Reporter

Man dies in accident

Thrissur: A 23-year-old youth died after being hit by a car at Manakkodi, near here, on Monday night. Rajeevan was rushed to the hospital but his life could not be saved, the police said. — Staff Reporter

Competitions for teachers

Corporation invites entries

KOZHIKODE: Entries have been invited for a logo for the 140th anniversary of the Kozhikode Corporation.

In a release here on Monday, the Corporation secretary said entries have been invited from the general public for a logo to commemorate the year-long anniversary celebrations of Kozhikode Corporation, besides a name for the trade fair being held in this connection.

The entries ought to reach the General Convener, 140th anniversary Organising committee, Kozhikode Corporation, Kozhikode-673 032, by September 16.
