85 per cent of pregnant women give birth in hospitals

Chandigarh: Awareness about health and hygiene is fast catching up among women of Karnal with the district becoming the first in Haryana where 85 per cent of the pregnant women give birth in hospitals.

A total of 85 per cent woman in Karnal give birth in hospitals in the presence of auxiliary nursing midwives whereas the rate elsewhere in the State is 40 per cent, Karnal's Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Gupta said on Tuesday.

"When the Safe Motherhood Campaign was launched in January 2006, the delivery rate in hospital was a mere 25 per cent," he was quoted as saying in an official release here.

Mr. Gupta said that keeping this in mind, a campaign was launched for the safety of the mother and the child. As a part of the campaign, doctors and health workers were encouraged to provide better medical and health services to people especially to the pregnant women.

The Deputy Commissioner on Tuesday reviewed the performance of the doctors and Multipurpose Women Health Workers in the Community Health Centres of Nilokheri, Indri, Gharaunda, Balla, Nissing and Asandh.
