`Government has brought in changes in education system'

TEACHER'S DAY: Minister for Higher Education D.H. Shankaramurthy lighting a lamp to inaugurate Teachers' Day function in Shimoga on Tuesday.

SHIMOGA: Minister for Higher Education D.H. Shankaramurthy said here on Tuesday that the Janata Dal (Secular)-Bharatiya Janata Party coalition Government had given priority for education.

Inaugurating a Teachers' Day function at the Kuvempu Rang Mandir to mark the birthday of former President S. Radhakrishnan he said the Government had initiated several steps to bring about changes in the education field.

Stating that teachers played a key role in national development activities he added that was unfortunate that they were not being accorded the honour and respect they deserved in society.

Teachers who were expected to mould the destiny of children should be assured a decent place in the society.

The Government as a first step towards the improvement of the condition of teachers had enhanced their salary by Rs. 200 apart from increasing the monthly honorarium of college guest lecturers to Rs. 5000, he added.

Mr. Shankaramurthy said the Government had started 500 secondary schools, 220 junior colleges and 14 degree colleges apart from improving infrastructure facilities in government schools.

Lecturer B.V. Vasanthkumar said teachers should take children on the righteous path.

Minister for Water Resources K.S. Eshwarappa, president of the Zilla Panchayat Bharathi Manjunathaih, MLA of Hosnagar Haratalu Halappa were among those present on the occasion.

Seven primary school teachers and five secondary school teachers were felicitated with the District Teachers' Awards.
