MCD raises retirement age for teachers

NEW DELHI: Hot on the heels of the Delhi Government's decision, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi has also raised the retirement age for teachers working in its schools from 60 years to 62.

Making this announcement at the Teachers' Day award function on Tuesday, MCD Standing Committee Chairman Jai Kishan Sharma said it had also been decided to give more powers to Principals of primary schools. They include sanctioning of leave of teachers and staff, permission to pursue higher studies and grant of annual increment to teachers and staff.

Mayor Farhad Suri was among those present at the function.

Swimming pool

for Janakpuri

NEW DELHI: Delhi Development Authority member Virender Kasana on Tuesday said that a swimming pool would be constructed at a vacant DDA plot in Janakpuri's A block. Also, a hi-tech gymnasium would come up at DDA Park in Narang Colony on built-operate-transfer basis, he added. DDA has given the green signal for both these projects.

Mr. Kasana was speaking at a function organised to launch a tree plantation drive in the area. He praised the local Councillor, Sanjay Puri, for ensuring all-round development of the area.

Maharashtra Mahotsav concludes

NEW DELHI: A 10-day Maharashtra Mahotsav coinciding with the Ganesh festival ended at Kamani Auditorium here on Tuesday with a performance by stars of the TV serial "Sa Re Ga Ma". The Mahotsav was organised by Sarvajanik Utsav Samiti.

While the winners of the "Sa Re Ga Ma" contests in 2001 and 2004, Prajakta Joshi Ranade and Rishikesh Ranade, presented "Sugam Sangeet" at Kamani, playback singer Sadhna Sargam and Rishikesh Ranade entertained the audience with popular Hindi and Marathi songs at Siri Fort Auditorium earlier during the festival.

Speaking at the concluding ceremony, Maharasthra Governor S. M. Krishna said Lokmanya Tilak had succeeded in using the spirit of Ganesh festival to raise people's voice against British rule that ultimately helped India gain Independence.

Volunteers sought

NEW DELHI: A Delhi-based voluntary organisation, Aditya Vocational and Health Care Society, working in the area of imparting vocational training and providing health care to underprivileged women living in the slums of Delhi is seeking professional volunteers who can devote their time and service for rendering help to the needy.

Run by a former diplomat, Vinod Kumar, and his wife Krishna Kumar, the organisation has been collaborating with a group of doctors to provide free medical care to slum dwellers at Dakshinpuri in South Delhi.
