HYDERABAD: The pilot colony taken up as part of Rajiv Gruha Kalpa scheme to provide housing for urban poor and low income group individuals in Ranga Reddy will be ready by October 2.

Minister for Mines Sabita Reddy inspected housing complex being constructed by the Andhra Pradesh Housing Board in G+3 pattern at Lakshmiguda of Rajendranagar mandal and interacted with beneficiaries on Tuesday.

The housing complex with 544 apartments spread across 2.75 acres would have common facilities like community hall, primary school, crèche, shopping complex etc.

"We have been living in a single room rented accommodation paying a rent of Rs.500 a month and sharing a common bathroom with five other tenants for the last six years. We are eager to move into our flat with its own bathroom and drinking water. I don't mind climbing any number of steps for the amenities the housing complex provides us," a jubilant Savithri, a teacher, told the Minister. Housing for economically weaker sections was the major programme announced by the Chief Minister after `Jalayagnam', Ms. Sabita said, adding two lakh flats would come up in the State under RGK at a cost of Rs. 213 crores. An additional Rs. 80 crores would be for infrastructure facilities, she disclosed.

The concept of housing complex with all infrastructure facilities like roads, drainage, street lights, drinking water was the initiative of Ranga Reddy Collector Premchander Reddy for the urban poor. The Chief Minister appreciated the concept and extended it for the entire State under RGK to provide quality housing to the low income groups, Ms. Sabita said.

14 locations

While 50,000 houses were sanctioned to Ranga Reddy, 28,007 houses were under construction in 14 locations. The beneficiaries mostly comprised SCs, STs, BCs. Of the total cost of Rs. 82,500, beneficiary's share was 10 per cent and the rest was bank loan.
