September 12 set as target for fixing weighbridge

Staff Correspondent

UDUPI: The conflict between the Iron Ore Lorry Owners' Associations and the Udupi district unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was resolved here on Tuesday. But slogan shouting by the lorry operators, stone throwing allegedly by the BJP workers, lathi-charge by the police, and scuffles between lorry operators and BJP workers, preceded the meeting called to resolve the issue.

Speaking at the meeting, Medical Education Minister V.S. Acharya said that the lorry owners' associations should install the weighbridge at Othinene by September 12, failing which the iron ore lorries would not be allowed into Udupi district from September 13.

The bridges on National Highway 17 were built five decades ago. The National Highways Department had made it clear that only single-axle vehicles up to 16 tonnes and multi-axle vehicle up to 25 tonnes can ply on the National Highway 17. Repeated requests to the iron ore lorry owners' associations to re-install the weighbridge were of no avail leading to the blockade.

The president of the North Karnataka Lorry Owners' Association Shashidhar Koravi said the association had accepted the conditions put forth by the district administration. Work on the re-installation of the weighbridge had already started, he said.
