MANGALORE: There is an urgent need to review the process of transfer of teachers in government schools, said Nagaraj Shetty, district in-charge Minister, after inaugurating the teachers' day celebrations observed by the Department of Public Instruction of the zilla panchayat on Tuesday. He said that school teachers were the most transferred government employees and there was a need to ensure transparency in their transfer. It was essential that the personal lives of teachers was considered while issuing transfers, he said.
Pass percentage
Mr. Shetty also urged the teachers and officials of the Education Department to ensure that the district secured a good pass percentage in the SSLC examinations this year. The district had slipped to the 13th position in the State last year. Zilla panchayat president Mamata Gatti, who presided over the function, emphasised the need to provide quality and value-based education.
Awarded
Seven primary school teachers and five high school teachers won awards for exceptional service at the district level. They were felicitated at the function. Vani B. Achar, who won the national level teacher's award in 2005-06 and Narayan Bhat, who won the state level award in 2005-06 were also felicitated. All the teachers from the district who are retiring this year were also felicitated.

K. Ashraff, Mayor, Dharanendra Kumar, vice-president, zilla panchayat, M. Maheshwar Rao, Deputy Commissioner, M. Kunjappa, chief executive officer of the zilla panchyat, and others were present at the function. Shankarappa, deputy director of public instruction, welcomed the gathering.
