Minority body suggests alternative to Vande Mataram

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: The Federation of Andhra Pradesh Minority Educational Institutions on Tuesday suggested that instead of "Vande Mataram", the song "Sare jahan se achha ... " could be sung in all minority institutions on September 7.

`Not advisable'

In a press release, Zafer Javeed, general secretary of the federation, said it was not advisable for a secular State to impose and make mandatory things that hurt religious sentiments of a section of the population, saying it was against the religious belief of Muslims to worship or praise any other deity.

The federation urged the Government to allow minority educational institutions be allowed to alternatively sing "Sare jahan se achha ... ", that was also in praise of the Motherland.

Mr. Javeed said this demand should not be perceived as Muslims being any less patriotic than fellow brethren as a few political parties were trying to portray.

Singing of "Vande Mataram" alone could not be the sole parameter to judge a citizen's patriotism and love for India, he remarked.
