Petition seeks closure of ICFAI study centres

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has ordered notices to the University Grants Commission, the All India Council for Technical Education and the Tamil Nadu Government, on a public interest litigation petition seeking the closure of Institute of Chartered Financial Analysis of India (ICFAI) study centres offering full-time academic programmes without permission.

The First Bench comprising Chief Justice A.P. Shah and Justice K. Chandru ordered notices to a total of 11 respondents, including the ICFAI University, on the petition filed by B.N. Devadas, a non-practising advocate.

The petitioner prayed for a direction to the authorities concerned to take appropriate action against the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysis of India Society, Hyderabad, and the ICFAI University, Dehradun.

The petitioner said the respondent-university and the society could not have any centres in Tamil Nadu without obtaining permission from the State Government and affiliation from the competent universities. Referring to an earlier order of the court on a similar PIL, the petitioner said though representations were sent to authorities concerned, they did not take any action.
