Gandhi Birth Centenary Memorial Awards

CHENNAI : More than 200 craftsmen from various Southern states have sent in several entries for the 37th Mahatma Gandhi Birth Centenary Memorial Awards Competition this year. Around 470 arts and crafts items are on display at Victoria Technical Institute (VTI) here and will be judged for the competition before Gandhi Jayanthi on October 2.

The best entry stands to win a Rs. 20,000 cash award and 10 cash awards of Rs. 5000 would be given to outstanding exhibits in different arts and crafts. Exhibits would be judged in the categories of Kalamkari, painting, sculpture in stone and wood, inlay and relief work, embroidery and miscellaneous crafts.

300 entries received

More than 300 entries have been received in the paintings category. Several landscapes, portraits and studies of the female form in various media adorn the exhibition hall. Wood carving entries range from paperweights to furniture. Among the Kalamkari panels presented for competition are two large panels depicting the life of Buddha.

The Mahatma Gandhi Birth Centenary Memorial Award was instituted in 1969 for making annual awards to the best artists and craftsmen in southern India, selected by the council of the VTI.
