Not a happy retirement day
R. Sujatha
The suspension of the chief of the neurosurgery department in the Madras Medical College has upset doctors serving in government hospitals. Apparently, it was a routine action by the vigilance committee, but what caused the ruffle was the fact that the doctor was due for retirement on the day the suspension notice was served.
Several doctors across the State were upset that a person with nearly 40 years of experience should have been treated shabbily on the last day of his service.
The doctor received the notice at 4 p.m. on August 30, giving him no chance to appeal against the decision.
During a Teacher's Day celebration in a city medical college, several doctors could not help remark in private about the lack of sensitivity on the part of the vigilance officials.
The officials could have acted earlier to set the matter right. The Health Minister, K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran, when contacted, said the disciplinary action taken on the doctor was based on a complaint by the vigilance committee and that the matter would be disposed of as quickly as possible.
