Giving sight is the best gift: Letika Saran

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI : Gift of sight should voluntarily come from every person in a society, said Commissioner of Police Ms Letika Saran here on Tuesday.

Speaking at the inaugural function of the 21st national eye donation fortnight, organised under the auspices of "Hope Zero,'' an initiative of the Chennai city police in association with non-governmental organisations, she said students, media, NGOs, medical fraternity and the police have come together on different occasions, but rarely for an act of gifting. "The gift will be more valuable and precious, when we do not know whom we have gifted and more when the act takes place when we are no more," she noted.

Dr. Mohan Rajan of Rajan Eye Care Hospitals presented an overview on the need and importance of eye donation.

Allaying apprehensions over eye donation, he appealed to the public to immediately inform the nearest eye bank, which could harvest eyes from the deceased person, and this action could provide vision to two persons.

Hope Zero's co-founders R. Shobana and Vidya Sagar, Joint Commissioners of Police M Ravi and Sandeep Rai Rathore, Rotary Rajan Eye Bank Director Dr Sujatha Mohan, policemen, officers and students participated.

The Commissioner presented certificates to police officers, who had registered their names to donate eyes.
