CHENNAI : The alumni of Stanley Medical College celebrated Teachers' Day by honouring an illustrious student and teacher of the college posthumously. An alumnus and a teacher of the student, K.V. Tiruvengadam, unveiled a portrait of Victor Solomon in the seminar hall of the college at a function attended by alumni and students. Dr. Tiruvengadam recalled Dr. Victor as an extraordinarily good student and a good human being. "If you saw him you would not know that he was brilliant. He was an outstanding student. He was not interested in making money. He was not communal or fanatical but religious." He told the students that Teacher's Day is celebrated to remind teachers that they were also students once. "Teaching is a way of life, behaviour, conduct and being a good human being. Teachers should be students all the time and learn from students. Students ask imponderable questions. It is important that teachers remain humble." Recalling the Stanleyan spirit, he urged teachers not to "beat a student with words." P. Guhanandhan, alumnus and consultant with World Health Organisation, A. Sundaram, vice principal and D.R. Gunasekaran, dean of the college, spoke. The alumni of P.S. Senior Secondary School launched a unique scheme for teachers to mark the day. The Alumni Association sponsored a Medical Hospitalization Insurance scheme for the teachers and other staff. In the first phase 40 per cent of the staff, representing those who had 15 years service, would be covered, according to the alumni association president, T.N. Arun Kumar. The Association was also instrumental in designing and developing the website for the school - www.pssenior.org. It includes the alumni association activities and projects.
