VISAKHAPATNAM : Andhra University Vice-Chancellor L. Venugopal Reddy has announced starter research grants would be given to select teachers every year to encourage them take up research projects in their respective fields. Addressing Teachers' Day celebrations in the university on Tuesday, he said interviews were being conducted for filling 176 vacancies of teachers and an additional 100 posts would be filled by the end of February. Paying rich tributes to Dr. Radhakrishnan , the Vice-Chancellor described him as a great teacher and philosopher par excellence, who stood for values in education. He said teachers should have character, tolerance and capability, and should be role models to their students. Prof. Reddy felicitated eight best academicians: Allam Appa Rao (computer science and systems engineering), D.V. Bhaskara Rao (meteorology and oceanography), K.P.R. Chowdary and S. Satyanarayana (Pharmaceutical Sciences), U. Vindhya (Psychology), YLN Murthy (Organic Chemistry), A.J. Solomon Raju (Environmental Sciences) and B.S. Vasudeva Rao (Education). He also felicitated J.V. Prabhakara Rao (Principal, AU College of Arts and Commerce), M. Satyanarayana (Human Genetics) and K. Niruparani (English Department) who received the `Best teacher' awards from the State Government during 2004 and 2005.
The Vice-Chancellor unveiled a bust of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, at the Institute of Advanced Studies in Education.
At GVMC
Commissioner N. Srikant felicitated 30 retired and serving teachers of GVMC Schools.
NSUI
Prof. Venugopal Reddy, Registrar P. Vijay Prakash, principal of AU College of Arts J.V. Prabhakara Rao, Head of the Journalism Department D.V.R. Murthy were felicitated by the NSUI.
