KOCHI: Protests are being raised against the continuing official apathy towards Kalady, the birthplace of Adi Sankara. There were no attempt on the part of the State Government and the Department of Tourism to improve the basic infrastructure in the area and also in promoting cultural tourism, P.V. Peethambaran, coordinator of Sree Sankara School of Dance, Kalady, said in a press release here on Tuesday. The failure to keep the promise to observe Sree Sankara Jayanti day as `Philosopher's Day' was an example of official neglect, he said. The then Chief Minister Oommen Chandy announced on May last that Sree Sankara Jayanti celebrations would be taken up by the State Government. However, no such effort was made this year, Mr. Peethambaran said. The tourist information centre, which was built to help pilgrims and tourists, was still awaiting inauguration. The proposal for `Adwai tha Veedhi' from M.C. Road to Kalady was yet to take off, he said. The Union and State Governments should take up cultural and development program mes in tune with the historical relevance of Kalady, he said.
