  • City-based trust observes 10th death anniversary of Mother Teresa
  • Mayor and VGMT-UDA chairman participate

VIJAYAWADA: Mayor Tadi Sakuntala on Tuesday underlined the need for launching service activities in the city on a large scale for the benefit of the poor. She advised people to take a cue from great personalities like Mother Teresa and serve the mankind.

Ms. Sakuntala was the chief guest at a programme organised by city-based Mother Teresa Memorial Charitable Trust marking the 10th death anniversary of the Mother.

She recalled that an inclination to serve humanity drove the Mother to India and to launch numerous service organisations. "Her service activities kept her alive in the hearts of people even 10 years after her demise," she said.

    Source of inspiration

Stating that people living in slum areas were suffering from diseases due to malnutrition and lack of medical facilities, the Mayor said that there was a need for more volunteers like the Mother to take care of the suffering.

Ms. Sakuntala said that Mother Teresa inspired many people, including film star Chiranjeevi who launched a blood bank. She advised the poor to send their children to schools, as literacy was the only way to combat poverty.

She distributed clothes to the poor.

Chairman of the VGTM-UDA Malladi Vishnu said that Mother Teresa motivated lakhs of people across the globe and made them contribute their mite to society.

"She proved that money is secondary for a person who really wants to do something for society. If we have a will to do something, money will come from different quarters," he said.

Mr. Vishnu lauded the efforts of Gogineni Sujatha, convener of the charitable trust, for conducting a programme to recall the services of the Mother.

    Blood donation

Ms. Sujatha said that their trust took the lead to install the statue of Mother Teresa at Siddhartha Nagar and had been conducting programmes at the statue for the last two years. She said that clothes were distributed to 125 aged persons. A blood donation camp was also organised by the trust.

Zonal chairman of the APSRTC Jogi Ramesh and others were present.
