COIMBATORE: Paintings, wooden toys, garments, baskets and candles made by disabled people are on sale. Nandini Voice for the Deprived, a non-Governmental Organisation based in Chennai, has organised a network of disabled people from all over Tamil Nadu and helped employ themselves using their skills in painting, wood carving and making of decorative items and agarbathis. "As almost all these people belong to the lower income group, they could lead an independent life by selling the products they make," says N.S. Venkataraman, Trustee, Nandini Voice for the Deprived. Especially disabled people in rural areas largely depended on other members of the family due to lack of employment opportunities. Self-employment was the best way to help these people lead respectable lives, he said. While paintings came in a variety including acrylic on canvass, other materials such as snacks were also prepared by them. The marketing of these products was done by the NGO and they had even appointed a few disabled people to sell them in Chennai. To see the new Navarathri and Deepavali collection, visit www.nandinivoice.org, which has uploaded the photographs of the products that are on sale. Those interested in buying them can contact Nandini Voice for the Deprived, M 60/1, 4th Cross Street, Besant Nagar, Chennai- 600090. Phone: 044 - 24916037.
