BEFI silver jubilee meet to be held in 2007
Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD:
The silver jubilee conference of the Bank Employees Federation of India (BEFI) will be held in the city between January 7 and 10 next year.
The conference is significant in the light of the attacks on bank employees due to the "ruthless" pursuance of the globalisation policies being pursued by the Government at the behest of the World Bank, BEFI general secretary Santhi Bardhan said.
Addressing a press conference along with the general secretary of the State chapter, B. Sudhakar, here on Monday, he said the bank unions and the Left parties could halt the Bill introduced in Parliament for bringing down the Government's holding in the public sector banks (PSBs). However, the Tarapore committee appointed by the Reserve Bank of India recommended handing over 67 per cent capital of the PSBs to the private sector and this was reflective of the Government's/RBI's thinking about PSBs.
He said while the business and profits of banks were increasing phenomenally, the employment level and share of employment cost in their total expenditure were being reduced conspicuously.
