Hyderabad: Hyderabad Collector R.V. Chandravadan urged teachers to constantly upgrade their teaching skills. They should not be under the `dubious belief' that they know everything. Old teaching methodology would no longer deliver the goods. "Each child is a challenge. Try to overcome it with commitment, devotion and zeal," he said. Mr. Chandravadan was addressing teachers on the occasion of Teachers Day here on Tuesday. He called for evolving standards to assess performance of teachers. In the West, there was a continuous evaluation of teachers' performance. But it was not the case in India. If students were to evaluate then "most of us will fail", the Collector remarked, adding that he was a teacher himself once.
Poor pass percentage
Mr. Chandravadan deplored the poor pass percentage of Government schools. It was just 27 per cent in the Mahboobia Government School. On the other hand, the pass percentage of private schools was much better. It was easy to pass the blame on children. But it was necessary to find out why parents were wary of admitting their wards in Government schools. He asked the private schools to work as models of excellence rather than being models of competition.
Methodology
The district administration, he said, had identified 36 sites for opening new schools in the twin cities. Recently, a sanitation programme -Suvidha - was launched in 211 government schools. This concept would be extended to aided schools also. Teachers Day was an occasion to review once performance and ascertain how successful one was in the teaching methodology, interacting with students and bringing out their latent talent. The contribution made by teachers was immeasurable, the Collector said and recalled how President Abdul Kalam attributed his present position to his teachers in Rameshwaram. Later, Mr. Chandravadan presented awards to 96 teachers of Government schools in 11 mandals of city.
