MRTS Tarnaka-Hi-Tec City route realigned

V. Geetanath

Greenlands-Punjagutta-Banjara Hills-Jubilee Hills route to be avoided

  • Line 3 of about 21 kilometres realigned
  • Line 1 is Miyapur-Chaitanyapuri and Line 2 is Secunderabad-Falaknuma

HYDERABAD: While technical and financial bid to select developers for the proposed Mass Rapid Transit System for Hyderabad gets ready, technical experts have made major route realignment for Line 3.

Line 3 is between Tarnaka and Hi-Tec City of about 21 kilometres with 20 stations. Avoiding the posh Greenlands-Punjagutta-Banjara Hills-Jubilee Hills route, it will now be built along the Begumpet-Ameerpet-Madhuranagar-ousufguda-Jubilee Hills route.

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), which has done detailed project reports for all the three lines and the `owner consultant' Span Consultants & Semaly have suggested the change to the Government.

Line 1 is Miyapur-Chaitanyapuri and Line 2 Secunderabad-Falaknuma. After reassessing Line 3, technical experts have decided that the curve along Rajiv Gandhi statue-Punjagutta stretch was bit too steep for a metro rail on standard gauge.

    Technical grounds

Project Director N.V.S. Reddy says the route change was made on technical grounds, prospective `ridership' and prospect of fewer demolitions. At Rajiv Gandhi statue in Begumpet, the curvature was 95 metres radius while the maximum curvature for a standard gauge was 120 metres radius.

Only Hong Kong Metro went up to a steep curvature of 95 metres radius, he says. From Tarnaka, Line 3 will cross over existing railway track at Alugadda Bavi, Bhoiguda railway station and Chilkalguda junction, takes a right turn at Hotel Ramakrishna, Keyes High School, Sangeet theatre, St. John's Church and Iskcon Temple.

It will be built on the right of Hari Hara Kala Bhavan and CTO flyover and left side of Begumpet flyover (towards Lifestyle building).

From Greenlands-Ameerpet road, it will be built via Yousufguda check post, Vijayabhaskara Reddy stadium, Krishnanagar, State Home and on to Road No.5 and Road No.36 of Jubilee Hills.

Interchanging stations for MRTS Line 1/Line 2 will be at Osmania Medical College, Line 2/Line 3 will be Parade Grounds and Line 1/Line 3 will be at Ameerpet stations.

For MMTS-MRTS, interchange stations will be at Bharatnagar, Begumpet, Khairatabad and Malakpet. Normal railway-MRTS interchange stations will be at Nampally and Secunderabad.

Mr. Reddy says the Metro will be built slightly higher than the existing flyovers.

Metro Lines will be built at 10-11 metres height when they have to cross over existing flyovers.
