KOCHI: They were champions all. This is what the participants at the 8th All Kerala Chess Tournament for the Blind held in Aluva proved. Organised by the Kerala Chess Association for the Blind and the Federal Bank Officers' Association at the Jeevass Kendra, the tournament was an eye-opener to the spirit and determination of the champions who beat all odds. It also offered a chance for new talents to display their skills. Akesh Kumar from Kannur secured six points from as many games and topped the group. Mohammed Sali from Kozhikode and Abdul Samad from Kottayam came second and third respectively. Nisar, Yoonas and Sidad - all from Kozhikkode - bagged the first, second and third spots in the junior division. The prizes were given away by M.O. John, the former chairman of the Aluva Municipal Council, at a function chaired by V. Salim, council vice-chairman.
