Raichur: The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has urged the Government to initiate action to modify the Women's University of Bijapur into a campus-based unitary and introduce specialised courses for women as per the recommendations of the M.R. Srinivasan task force committee. Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, Prabhudev Kapgal, general secretary of the State unit of the ABVP, said the Women's University had been established at Bijapur to set right the regional imbalances in north Karnataka as per the recommendations of the M.D. Nanjudappa Committee. But it had not been able to serve the purpose for which it was established. The study level at the university had been limited to mere degree courses. The Government had not evinced interest in introducingspecialised courses to help women become self-sufficient, he said. He said instead of initiating action to introduce specialised study at the university and making it a campus-based unitary on the lines of Hampi University, all women's colleges in the 12 districts of north Karnataka were affiliated with the Women's University. However, it was stayed by the Karnataka High Court which directed the Government to implement the recommendations of the task force committee. But the Government was delaying the implementation of the High Court order, he said. Mr. Kapgal said the ABVP had decided to take a delegation to the Minister for Higher Education on September 11 demanding that the Government take steps to meet the demand of the students. It had also decided to conduct a State-level conference of women and convene a symposium this month to discuss the steps to be taken to improve the standards of education in the Women's University, he said. Welcoming the stand of the Governor in support of a probe into the alleged irregularities in the Women's University, he alleged that the university vice-chancellor was involved in irregularities in the recruitment of lecturers, professors and readers in the past two years. The Finance Department and some Syndicate members of the university had submitted a report to Education Secretary on this. The Governor had directed the Government to investigate the charge, he said.
