Vijayawada gearing up for top table tennis tournament

The mega event will be held from October 4 to 8 at DRMC indoor stadium

VIJAYAWADA: Big time table tennis comes to Vijayawada after a gap of five years in which country's top paddlers will be seen in action.

The Andhra Pradesh Table Tennis Association has allotted the prestigious national ranking championship - 2006 to Krishna District Table Tennis Association and the mega event will be held from October 4 to 8 at DRMC indoor stadium.

"As this is the first national ranking tournament, players like Achanta Sharat Kamal, the Commonwealth champion, Subham Sharma, Jitendra, Nikith Bhanu and Ramana of Andhra Pradesh, along with 600-odd paddlers will be seen in action.

The championship will be played in eight new Stag deluxe tables and the prize money at stake is Rs. 4 lakhs," said APTTA secretary S. M. Sultan here on Wednesday.

Events would be held in men, women, youth, boys and girls, junior boys and girls, sub-junior boys and girls and cadet boys and girls singles. The performance of the players in this National ranking tournament would entitle them for the selection in the national teams for international events.

The tournament is organised with the support of Member of Parliament L. Rajagopal, who is the president of the organising committee. Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) appointed S. Oberoi as chief referee of the championship and 30 technical committee members would assist him for the smooth conduct of the event.

District Sports Development Officer B. Sudhakar said that national events such as the ranking tourney would help spread the game among youngsters in a big way.

Former mayor Jandhyala Shankar urged sports lovers and enthusiasts to come forward in a big way to make the event a grand success. Amma Charities chairman B. Srinivas also promised to render support for conduct of the tourney.
