HUBLI: Although the voices of dissent in the present coalition Government seem to have subsided, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-Janata Dal (Secular) Government faces the threat of collapsing, the former Chief Minister and president of the State unit of the Samajwadi Party has said.

Addressing a convention of party workers at Unakal in Hubli on Tuesday, Mr. Bangarappa said the coalition Government had lost the confidence of the people owing to corruption.

With the State Government was facing a threat from its constituent parties, the Samajwadi Party was preparing for general elections and had decided to field candidates in all Assembly constituencies, he said. He clarified that the party would not enter into alliance with any other party. Throughout his speech, Mr. Bangarappa criticised the Union and the State Governments. He said people-oriented programmes that were introduced during his tenure as Chief Minister had been discontinued for political reasons.

He criticised the Union Government for not giving adequate assistance for handling the flood situation. He alleged that the Union Government was indulging in partisan politics while releasing funds for relief measures.

"When I raised the issue in Parliament, there was no specific assurance given by the Minister concerned. Now addressing a Congress convention in Bangalore, All India Congress Committee president Sonia Gandhi promises to release funds," he said. Govindaraj Harivana, Ashok Badiger, Viresh Salagar, C.G. Patil, Mahadevappa Menasinkai, Isabella Das and other leaders of the party were present.
