Five killed in road accident
GADAG:
Five persons were killed and eight seriously injured when a North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation bus collided with a tipper on the outskirts of Harti village near Mulgund of Gadag district on Tuesday. The bus was on its way to Haveri from Gadag. Police gave the names of the victims as Vinod Kamaraddy (20) of Chincholi, Riyaz Ahmed Dhalayat (20) of Mulgund, Meenakshi Parameshwarappa Bellad (29) of Koppal, Prashanth Chanabasappa Madar of Laxmeshwar and Basavaraj Durugappa Madar (22) of Neelgund. Farmer commits suicide
BIJAPUR:
Unable to repay huge amount of debts Sabu Lakkappagol (55), a farmer from Kakandaki village, 30 km from here, committed suicide on Tuesday.
He reportedly hanged himself from a tree in his field. According to a complaint filed by his son, Kalyani, the family had availed itself of loan from both banks and private lenders but was not in a position to payback the amount owing to failure of crop for the fifth consecutive fifth year. Award for Shabana
BANGALORE:
Hindi film star and social activist Shabana Azmi has been selected for this year's Basava Sri award instituted by the Sri Murugarajendra Math of Chitradurga, one of the leading Veerashaiva maths in the State. The selection of Ms. Azmi, was announced in Chitradurga on Wednesday by the head of the Math Sri Shivamurthy Murugarajendra Swamiji. Bidar: The
Karnataka State Handicapped Welfare Committee has threatened to launch a Statewide agitation if the State Government does not take steps to provide ration cards to people with disabilities. People with disabilities are dependent on others for movement and other daily chores. They cannot go to government offices multiple times for getting facilities due to them. The government should therefore, ensure that once these people apply for these cards, they are door delivered to them, a memorandum submitted by the committee to the Government, said.

LIC scheme for poor
CHIKMAGALUR:
The Life Insurance Corporation of India will launch a micro-insurance scheme to cater to the needs of the poor, S. Behera, senior divisional manager of the Udupi division of LIC, said here on Wednesday. He told presspersons that the scheme would be operated through NGOs for policies ranging from Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 50,000. The State Primary Teachers Association has complained that the Government has deducted 3 per cent of dearness allowance from teachers' salary. Members of the association will go on a strike on Thursday in protest against this cut. Their other demands include clear instructions from the Government for reorganising the school development and management committees, not reducing holidays and casual leave facility to teachers. Raichur:
The Raichur police arrested 12 persons on the charge of launching an unprovoked attack on Dalits in Gabbur village of Deodurga taluk on Sunday. All have been remanded in judicial custody. The police said that a group of people attacked Dalits in connection with the reported molestation of a girl of a Navodaya school by a student of a backward class hostel in the village. Work on road
HUBLI:
Revenue Minister and district-in-charge Jagadish Shettar performed "bhoomi puja" for the work on the development of road stretch between Hosur Cross and New Bus Stand in Hubli on Tuesday. The development of this district main road is being taken up at a cost of Rs. 74.83 lakh, which includes developing a four-lane road. The Minister directed to officials to keep an eye on the quality of the work and ensure completion of the work on time. N.L.
