Kuruvai harvest gathering pace in Thanjavur

Special Correspondent

THANJAVUR: Kuruvai harvest is picking up in Thanjavur and Tiruvarur districts.

This year, farmers have employed more number of combined harvesters than labourers at various places.

The harvesters are economical, says a farmer. "They collect a rent of Rs.1,200-Rs.1,500 an acre. The machine completes the harvest in 40 minutes-one hour. It cuts the crop and separates hay and paddy. The paddy can be collected in a gunny bag directly from the harvester," he says.

50 combined harvesters

M. Jothi, Joint Director of Agriculture, Thanjavur, says 50 combined harvesters have been at work in the district. The wages will be Rs. 500 more per acre if labourers are employed.

Of the total area of 43,447 hectares, harvest has been completed on 4,835 hectares. The yield varies from 4.9 tonnes to five tonnes a hectare. The maximum of 7.7 tonnes has been recorded in a village near Kumbakonam.
