Students swoon after having noon meal

Dharmapuri: About 300 students swooned after eating egg along with their noon meal in the Budhireddipatti Government High School on Tuesday.

According to sources, more than 500 students of the school at Pappireddipatti ate egg with noon meal in the school. Immediately after their meal, around 300 students started to vomit and swoon. They were rushed to the Dharmapuri Government Hospital and administered drips. The remaining students were treated as out-patients.

Police suspect it to be a case of food poisoning caused by poor quality eggs. Egg samples have been sent to Chennai for chemical analysis. Noon meal organiser Raji has been suspended. — Staff Reporter

Auction sale of finance company

land finalised

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has finalised the auction-sale of 161.88-acre land belonging to Anubhav Foundation, which is under liquidation, for a sum of Rs. 60 crore.

Situated about nine km from Sriperumpudur on the Chennai-Bangalore national highway, the land was to be auctioned and the proceeds to be distributed to the depositors of the company. Another piece of land, a 1.77-acre country club lying within the layout, was auctioned for Rs. 1.4 crore. While Velankanni Information Systems clinched the Rs. 60-crore deal amidst heavy competition, payable in 30 days, Chandra Developers quoted Rs. 1.4 crore for the clubhouse.

Justice Chithra Venkataraman approved the sale, in which about 50 persons participated.

Cases transferred

CHENNAI: Ten cases registered by local police in various parts of the State against Anantharaj for alleged cheating have been transferred to the State Crime Branch Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.

While five cases had been registered by the Mamallapuram police station, one case had been registered by the Kancheepuram district crime branch, two by the Ramanathapuram district crime branch and two by the Chennai City Central Crime Branch.

The main allegation against him is that he cheated the public by falsely promising them to build houses for them and collecting money in instalments, the police said.

There were also 52 petitions against him. No final decision had been taken on them yet. — Special Correspondent

Madras High Court grants bail to

MDMK functionary

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court on Wednesday granted conditional bail to the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) functionary, Velacherry Manimaran.

Justice K.N. Basha, granting bail, cautioned Mr. Manimaran against delivering speeches in support of banned outfits at a meeting on August 17.

He is to reside in Kancheepuram for a week and report to the local police and shall execute a personal bond for Rs. 50,000 and furnish two sureties for a like sum each.

According to police, Mr. Manimaran, who was arrested on August 19, made provocative speech prejudicial to national security at the meeting.

The Judge also granted anticipatory bail to the Dalit Panthers of India functionary Ganesan alias Kadamban, who had organised the meeting. — Special Correspondent

RAMANATHAPURAM : M. Kalimuthan, Headmaster, Panchayat Union Primary School, has been conferred the State Government's Dr. Radhakrishnan Best Teacher Award for 2005-06.

Water level

MADURAI : The water level in the Periyar dam stood at 119.20 feet (full level 136 feet) with an inflow of 592 cusecs and a discharge of 1113 cusecs. The level in the Vaigai dam was 45.64 feet (full level 71 feet) with an inflow of 1007 cusecs and a discharge of 41 cusecs. The combined Periyar credit stood at 3582 mcft. The Vaigai dam and the Manjalar dam recorded 3 mm of rainfall each followed by Periyar dam 1. — Staff Reporter

Gang arrested

TIRUNELVELI : The Tirunelveli city crime branch police have arrested a six-member gang for preparing bogus documents of various government departments with fake stamps.

Speaking to reporters here on Wednesday, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), R. Dhinakaran, said a special team, headed by the Inspector Rajendran of city crime branch, was formed recently after information started pouring in about the flow of fake documents of government departments with counterfeit seals.

The police team identified the gang, comprising Asir Kovilpitchai (65) of Anna Nagar, Rajamani (65) of Ramaiyanpatti, Murugan (40) of Vallanadu, Arumugam (54) of Thaazhaiyuththu, Balan (51) and Chellaiah (68) of Thimmarajapuram, who were involved in preparing bogus orders with fake seals of various government departments including police, prison, revenue, corporation, panchayats etc.

Spot admission

TIRUNELVELI : The Tamil Nadu Open University's spot admission of students from Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari and Tuticorin districts for the academic year 2006 - 2007 will be held at St. Ignatius College of Education on September 9 and 10, after distribution of certificates to those who passed in the examinations held in January 2006.

According to the Controller of Examinations, TNOU, N. Sethuraman, simply drafted study materials will be distributed to the students immediately after the spot admission to various courses being offered by the university.

Aspiring students should come with all academic certificates required for the admission, birth certificate, prescribed fee and other academic testimonials.

The Collector, G. Prakash, will distribute certificates to successful students.

Orientation programme

SALEM: The Sona College of Technology organised orientation programmes for its first year B.E./B.Tech students recently.

A release said Professor from Janson's School of Business R. Krishnamoorthi spoke on developing soft skills. The Salem-based educationist, Jayaprakash Gandhi, said students should not hesitate to face the challenges. He stressed the importance of communication skills. Woman dies in accident

SANKAGIRI: A 65-year-old woman was fatally knocked down by a motorcycle here recently.

Police said Kaliyammal of Akkammapet was trying to cross the road when the accident took place. She sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the Sankagiri Government Hospital. She was referred to Erode Government hospital, where she died. The Sankagiri police registered a case. - Staff Reporter

SALEM: The Tirumala Tirupathi Devasthanam asked the SPEED (Seva Prachar Educational Embarkment Drive), an organisation, to conduct the Srinivasa Thirukalyanam here. NAMAKKAL: The OAZOANE, a non-governmental organisation, organised a capacity building programme on `RMK Micro Credit project facilitation' here recently.

About 50 chief functionaries from the 50 NGOs from Namakkal, Karur and Nilgris districts attended the programme. Secretary, Consortium Namakkal NGOs, M. Thillai Sivakumar presided over the programme. Secretary of OAZOANE K. Raajendran also spoke, a release said.

Onam fete in Karaikal

KARAIKAL: The Malayali Samajam of Karaikal in the Union Territory of Pondicherry celebrated Onam festival here on Sunday. Sudhir Kumar, Karaikal Collector, inaugurated the festival. The festival and programmes were organised by C.S. Kurup, president, and Ms. Amirthavally, secretary of Malayali Samajam, as also the traditional `Pulikkali' procession. T. Vasudevan, DGM, and T.K.K. Anti-chikungunya exercise inaugurated

ARIYALUR: The District Collector, Anil Meshram, on Wednesday, inaugurated the work on prevention of chikungunya through an `anti-larva programme.'

He poured anti-larva chemical into a drainage channel. The Deputy Director of Health, Ashokan, and the Municipal Chairman, Kannan, were present.

Assistance distributed

PUDUKOTTAI: Distribution of financial assistance to poor students, and equipment and bed sheets to the Government Headquarters Hospital marked the installation of the new office-bearers of the Lions Club of Victory here recently. The Lions district president, B. Bhuvaneswari, installed K.R. Ramanathan as president and his team of office-bearers on the occasion. V. Ramprakash was inducted as secretary and R. Narendran as treasurer. She also inducted the new members.The zonal president of the Lions International, R. Vedamurthi, presented scholarship to students. Another zonal president, K. A. M. Ashraf Ali, felicitated the new office-bearers.

DPI demonstration

PUDUKOTTAI: Volunteers of the Dalit Panthers of India (DPI) on Wednesday staged a demonstration at two places in the district demanding reservation of seats for Dalits in the local body elections.

Led by the district secretary of the party, Kalai Murasu, they staged a demonstration near the Anna Statue at Aranthangi. A similar demonstration, led by the union secretary, Parvendan, was held at Kandarvakottai.

TIRUCHI: The level at the Mettur dam stood at 112.30 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Wednesday. The inflow was 9,023 cusecs, and the outflow 12,000 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Mass contact day postponed

ERODE: The Collector D. Karthikeyan has canceled his mass contact day to be held at Burgur on September 6. It would be held on September 12.

Similarly the Collector will conduct a mass contact day on September 13 at Sungakaranpalayam near Punjai Puliampatty.

ERODE: The District Health Officials are taking efforts to prevent the spread of chikungunya.

Medical officials in all hospitals have been asked to collect blood samples of patients suspected to be having the disease and sent them to Pune for testing. Fogging will be intensified at all places till November 30.

Non-Governmental Organisations and students have been asked to cooperate with health officials in destroying the larva. The Collector wanted the public to keep their surroundings clean.

Girl dies of burns

ERODE: A nineteen-year-old girl was found dead in her house near Uthukuli on Tuesday. The police said Suriya (19) and Rajesh of Sirukalanji village, near Uthukuli, got married six months back.

When Rajesh returned home from work, he found her with burn injuries.

Though she was immediately taken to Government Headquarters Hospital in Tirupur, her life could not be safed.

The police have registered a case of suspicious death.

SALEM: Student Federation of India activists staged a demonstration in front of Periyar University on Wednesday demanding the Government to take steps to distribute the scholarships to students at the beginning of academic year.

They asked the Government to sort out the problems in distributing scholarships in a number of colleges in the State.
