Police alert in State to continue

A comprehensive security programme proposed for nearly 100 suburban railway stations

Extra vigil in and around the atomic power plant at Kalpakkam continues

CHENNAI: The alert sounded by the Tamil Nadu Police headquarters in the wake of the Mumbai blasts will continue.

Besides the approaching anniversary of the attack on the World Trade Centre on September 11, the alert assumes importance in the wake of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's statement that States should exercise utmost vigil in the wake of intelligence agencies warning of possible terror attacks, a senior police officer told The Hindu .

The officer said following the Mumbai blasts, the State police stepped up its vigil and personnel manning thebordercheckposts were instructed to be extra cautious. Patrolling in railway stations was stepped up and the railway police and Railway Protection Force personnel were deployed on trains. A comprehensive security programme was proposed for nearly 100 suburban railway stations.

Police sources said as part of security arrangements, hunt for the accused absconding in fundamentalism-related cases was stepped up.
