Best teacher award

HYDERABAD: Professor T. Navaneeth Rao National Best Teacher Award in Chemistry for 2006 was presented here to E.D. Jemmis, Professor, Department of Physical Chemistry, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, on Tuesday. Instituted by the A.V. Rama Rao Research Foundation, AP Akademi of Sciences and Indian Institute of Technology (IICT), it comes with Rs. 25,000 prize money and a citation. - Special Correspondent

Officials' term extended

HYDERABAD: The Government has extended the term of six officials as members of the Cyberabad Development Authority for two years from October 18, 2005. The officials are: Vice-Chairman, HUDA (as Vice-Chairman), VC and MD of Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation Ltd, Commissioner of Police, Secretary, Finance and Planning or his nominee and Commissioner, Seri Lingamapally Municipality (as members). - Special Correspondent

Special train extended

HYDERABAD: South Central Railway has extended the run of train no. 715/716 Tirupati-Nagarsol-Tirupati weekly special by one more trip. The extra days of service will be on September 7, from Tirupati, and the next day, from Nagarsol. The trains will have 15 coaches. - Special Correspondent

Minister detained

KURNOOL: CPI (M) supporters led by district secretary T. Shadrak detained Minister for Commercial Taxes Konatala Ramakrishna urging him to use his good offices to ensure drought relief for Kurnool district. TRS to take out cycle rally

Man drowned

KADAPA: A plastic pitcher vendor Jammaiah was drowned in Kondapet channel of KC Canal at Porumamilla road in Mydukur mandal when he went to bathe in it on Tuesday evening. In another accident, T. Easwara Reddy (25) died when a gravel-laden tractor fell into the Kundu river at Kamanur in Proddatur town. - Staff Reporter

Woman dies in clash

KURNOOL: A 24-year-old woman died and three others were injured in a clash at Kotekal in Kurnool district on Wednesday. According to reports, two families clashed over a land dispute. - Staff Reporter

Mala Mahanadu's threat

HYDERABAD: Mala Mahanadu has threatened to launch another agitation if the Centre's decision on Scheduled Castes categorisation went against the Malas' interests. K. Kakinada: The lunar eclipse scheduled for Thursday will be from 11.36 p.m. to 1.08 a.m. and its impact is negligible on our country, according to Bhattiprolu Tukaram Sharma, chairman, Kakinada chapter of the All-India Federation of Astrologers' Societies. Awards for professors

WARANGAL: Kakatiya University Chemistry professor S. Jagannatha Swamy and Public Administration professor G. Sreenivas Reddy have been selected for State Teacher Awards 2006 by the State Government. Prof. Swamy has 29 years of experience and is presently the registrar of the university. Prof. Reddy has 34 years of university service and is presently the Principal of University Arts college, Subedari. Reader in Chemistry, ABV Government Degree College, Jangaon, K. Held for trying to `mislead' court

VIZIANAGARAM: A person who fraudulently appeared as an accused in a case was arrested at Bobbili on Tuesday.

Yamalapalli Appa Rao of Chintada village in Bobbili mandal allegedly attended court for hearing in place of Sana Lakshmana Rao along with three more persons accused in a clash in 2003.

Judge Surya Prakasa Rao asked the police to arrest Yamalapalli Appa Rao and the other three for trying to mislead the court.

Cheques distributed

VIZIANAGARAM: Based on an appeal made by eight retired non-provincial menial staff at the grievance cell, ZP Chairperson B. Jhansi Lakshmi distributed cheques for Rs.7.58 lakhs in settlement of their long-pending benefits at the Zilla Parishad on Wednesday.

The amount was adjusted on `humanitarian grounds' from the ZP general funds following a directive from the Government, she said.

SVU to introduce

5-year physics course

TIRUPATI: Sri Venkateswara University on Wednesday claimed that it would be introducing a 5-year integrated course in Physics from September 14 with the approval of the Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education. Of the 88 students invited for interview strictly on merit basis, only the 35 have been selected for the course which is the first of its kind in the State. Prof. S. Buddudu of SVU's Department of Physicsis the Course-Coordinator. - Special Correspondent

Pension sanctioned

Madanapalle: B. Kothakota sarpanch K. Srinivasulu distributed pension amounts to the old aged, physically-challenged and widows. Harinath of Velugu organisation said 1,808 pensions were sanctioned in B. Kothakota mandal. Rs. 20,000 was paid to Sasikala, daughter of the deceased Bhavani Sangham leader Ramalakshmi under the Abhay scheme.
