K.M. Abraham's funeral today

Freedom fighter and CPI(M) leader died on Tuesday evening

KOTTAYAM: The body of K.M. Abraham, freedom fighter and veteran trade unionist, who died at a private hospital in Kochi on Tuesday evening, was brought home on Wednesday. The body was placed at the CPI(M) district committee office here for one hour on Wednesday morning for the public to pay their last respects. Later it was taken to his home at Pampady. The funeral is scheduled to be held at St. Simon's Church cemetery, Velloor, at 11 a.m. on Thursday.

Abraham who entered politics as a Congressman had taken active role in the freedom struggle, but later joined the fledgling Communist movement in the Central Travancore area. He was deputed by the party to organise the exploited paddy workers of the Kuttanad area. He had led several workers struggles in the area and was arrested by police many a time. Abraham entered the parliamentary career as a member of the Lok Sabha from Kottayam segment in 1967. One-and-a-half decades later, he was elected to Kerala Assembly from Kottayam. He had also functioned as the chairman of Travancore Cements Ltd. during 1996-2000.

Abraham was a member of the CITU central committee and also CPI(M) State committee. Currently he was functioning as a member of the district committee of CPI(M).

He is survived by his wife and six children.
