MALAPPURAM: Union Minister of State for External Affairs E. Ahamed has called upon the Muslim community to make an introspection into its role in the socio-educational and employment spheres of the country. He has said that representation of the community, which constitutes nearly 14 per cent of India's population, was abysmally low in the spheres of education and employment. The Union Minister was inaugurating a seminar on `the educational march of Malappuram' organised by the Samastha Kerala Sunni Students Federation (SKSSF) at Kottakkal on Wednesday.
Disparity
Mr. Ahamed said that though some Muslims were excelling in arts, sports and cultural fields, the representation of the community in education, Government service, media management as well as private sector employment was way behind others. He regretted that Muslims had only 2.8 per cent representation in Central Government services and nationalised banks. He said that the community should strive to find a renewed verve and energy through strategic alliances in socio-educational spheres. SKSSF district president Sayed Hameedali Shihab Thangal presided over the function. M. Ummer, MLA, gave away the awards for those who excelled in examinations. SKSSF district general secretary Sathar Pandaloor welcomed the gathering.
